US denies mosque was hit in Syria, video shows aftermath [updated]

The US military has rejected claims by several monitoring organisations that a US airstrike on Thursday killed dozens of Syrian civilians in a mosque, saying instead that the strike targeted and killed al-Qaeda militants.

According to local sources, 63 civilians were killed in the attack while praying in the mosque in a village near the northern city of Idlib.

A US official confirmed the airstrike, but said that it struck a building where al-Qaeda members were convening, killing “several terrorists”.

A video (below) purportedly from the scene of the attack showing scores of bodies and wounded people in a building seems to corroborate local sources.

The US official said that an investigation into civilian casualties would be launched.

Images circulating on Twitter on Friday shed further light on the claims.
