Turkey unemployment hits new peak

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has announced the most recent unemployment figures in Turkey. According to TUIK, in November 2016 3.7 million people were unemployed in the country which is 12.1% of those able to work.

November’s figures were the highest in Turkey for almost seven years. Since March 2010 unemployment figures have been rising steadily, passing the 12% threshold for the first time in seven years.

Rise in youth unemployment

TUIK put the figures for youth (ages 15-24) unemployment at 22.6%, a rise of 3.5% on the previous year.

Fall in agricultural work

While job opportunities in agriculture fell significantly, non-agricultural job opportunities rose with 491,000 more people being employed last year.
