Turkey responsible for opposition no-show in Astana, says Syrian envoy

Bashar Jaafari

Bashar Jaafari, the head of the Syrian government delegation to the Syria talks in both Geneva and Astana, has said that Turkey is responsible for the absence of the Syrian opposition in the third round of talks in Astana, Kazakhstan.

“One of the three guarantor countries – I mean Turkey – has not fulfilled its responsibilities, and so this means that the absence of the armed groups should be asked of them,” Jaafari told reporters during a press conference as part of the talks.

The Syrian opposition had blamed continuing airstrikes by both Russia and the Syrian government for its decision not to participate in this round of talks.
