The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor, has reported on Saturday that the Syrian Democratic Forces are within 8km of the eastern part of Raqqa city centre, the Islamic State’s stronghold in Syria.

Basing its report on what is says is “several reliable sources” on the ground, the war monitor said, “the SDF advanced in the northeastern countryside of Raqqa by taking control of the Khnez area after counter attacks and support by the coalition airstrikes; and reached 8km from the eastern sections of Raqqa city.

According to SOHR, SDF fighters also found thermal missiles in Maizla town in Raqqa’s northeastern countryside.

The SDF, a predominantly Kurdish-Arab alliance supported by several other groups, launched the 3rd phase of the Wrath of Euphrates operation on the Islamic State’s de-facto capital in Syria on 4 February 2017.
