Pro-Erdogan cleric urges Turkey to produce nuclear weapons

President Erdogan gives Hayrettin Karaman an award as Turkey's Religious Affairs President Mehmet Gormez looks on.

Turkey needs to acquire nuclear weapons to “stand up against the West”, Hayrettin Karaman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s top cleric, has written in an article in pro-government newspaper Yeni Safak on Thursday.

“Military power was once arrows and horses but has been replaced by weapons, developed by science and technology of the nuclear era,” the cleric said.

“We should neither waste any time, nor listen to the West, who will try to stop us; and we should not just acquire these weapons but also produce them.”

Karaman said the West had a plan to destroy the “Great Ottoman Turkey” and that the weapons, if produced, would bring balance and allow the oppressed and victimised East to unite.

Fatwa for Erdogan

The controversial cleric earlier issued a fatwa (an authoritative Islamic legal opinion) to endorse Turkey’s proposed presidential system saying it was “equal to the sultanate,” adding, “the suffering of a small group for the benefit of the Islamic Community will be worth it.”

Turkey would violate the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if they decided to initiate a nuclear weapon programme.
