Community pays tribute to Briton Ryan Lock who died fighting IS in Syria

Ryan Lock, a 20-year-old British chef travelled to Northern Syria (Rojava) in August 2016 to fight the Islamic State (IS) group.

He joined the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and was involved in several missions.

He died on the outskirts of the jihadist group’s stronghold, Raqqa, in December 2016 after turning a gun on himself to avoid capture by IS.

His body arrived back in the UK on 18 February to a crowd of mainly Kurds, who paid tribute to for what they said was Lock’s “martyrdom” and “sacrifice”.
